The American philosopher and author Mortimer J Adler once said that the case of a good book is not to see how many of them you can get through but rather how many can get through to you. The book that got through to me this year was Jordan B Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life.

Since it is Women’s Month, let us see how women can incorporate Peterson’s 12 rules to embrace their true selves, overcome challenges and lead fulfilling lives while contributing positively to the world around them.

1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back:

It is all about confidence. Standing tall with your shoulders back reflects physical posture and symbolises strength. Embracing this rule will help you overcome self-doubt and societal pressures, enabling you to express your ideas and aspirations confidently.

2. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping:

Women often prioritise the needs of others before their own. However, self-care is essential for maintaining physical, emotional and mental well-being. By treating themselves with the same compassion they offer to loved ones, women can cultivate a sense of worthiness and positively impact those around them.

3. Make friends with people who want the best for you:

Supportive and uplifting relationships are invaluable. Surrounding yourself with friends who genuinely support your dreams and aspirations fosters a nurturing environment for personal growth. These friendships offer encouragement during difficult times and inspire you to pursue your goals with confidence.

4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today:

In the age of social media, comparison can be detrimental to a woman’s self-esteem and confidence. Focus on personal growth and progress rather than measuring yourself against others. Each woman’s journey is unique and recognising individual development fosters self-acceptance and fulfilment.

5. Do not let anyone do anything that makes you dislike them:

Boundaries are crucial in all relationships. Assigning boundaries with assertiveness and empathy is essential, ensuring that others respect your values and autonomy. This rule will empower you to stand up for your beliefs and prioritise your emotional well-being.

6. Set your house in perfect order before you criticise the world:

To effect positive change in the world, Peterson advises that you must first cultivate inner peace and balance. Addressing personal challenges, both physical and emotional, allows you to be more effective in your endeavours and lead by example. A stable foundation at home enables you to contribute meaningfully to your community and society.

7. Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient):

The pursuit of meaning and purpose is essential to lead a fulfilling life. This rule encourages you to explore your passions, values and interests, allowing you to align your life choices with what truly matters to you. By prioritising meaningful endeavours, you can create a positive impact on your life and the lives of others.

8. Tell the truth:

Honesty is a powerful virtue. Being truthful with yourself and others fosters authentic connections and builds trust in relationships. Foster deep connections and create a sense of authenticity in life.

9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something that you do not:

Active listening is a valuable skill that promotes empathy and understanding. This rule encourages you to approach conversations with an open mind. Do not listen to respond.

10. Be precise in your speech:

Effective communication is key to making an impact. Peterson says you should express yourself clearly and assertively to convey your thoughts and ideas. By communicating with precision, you can influence positive change and make your voice heard.

11. Do not bother people when they are skateboarding:

Respecting others’ autonomy and individuality is crucial. It is important to allow others the freedom to pursue their passions and make their own choices. By respecting individuality, you promote a culture of acceptance and inclusivity.

12. Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street:

Taking time for self-care and finding joy in the little things is vital for your well-being. Whether engaging in hobbies, spending time with loved ones or indulging in self-reflection, embracing this rule nurtures emotional health and fosters a positive outlook on life.

Although this seems like a challenging task to include these rules in your everyday life, practice makes perfect. And by tackling one rule at a time, the results will be astronomical!
