PPS Foundation funds a new career centre at the University of Fort Hare

Published: June 14, 2024

The PPS Foundation has established a new student career centre at the University of Fort Hare as part of its quest to support education in South Africa.

The PPS Career Centre on the Alice campus is designed as a 24/7 accessible space, offering a comprehensive range of career-related amenities, including 20 laptops and dedicated areas for workshops and information sessions. The centre will host several organisations and partners, including the Department of Labour, to offer career guidance, and conduct simulated interviews to teach students how to communicate effectively and dress appropriately for interviews.

The Foundation’s support for the University of Fort Hare and its students is a manifestation of our mutuality ethos, where the actions of the Foundation are guided by a shared vision of empowering and enabling students to achieve their full potential and positively impact society. The Foundation’s investment not only contributed to the university’s infrastructure but also to the future of its students and the broader community.

As we gear up to celebrate Youth Month, we are proud that the career centre is more than just a facility; it is a symbol of dedication to ensure that students, especially those who are the first to graduate in their families, have the right resources and opportunities to succeed in the job market for the greater good of South Africa and its economy.

Ayanda Seboni, Group Executive for Mutuality and Executive Trustee of the PPS Foundation, expressed the historical significance of the University of Fort Hare as the first educational institution for people of colour and its notable alumni, stating that the PPS Foundation is proud to be associated with such a prestigious institution.

Nokulunga Mnqeta, Director of the Fort Hare Foundation, described the partnership as mutually beneficial, extending beyond the university to impact the families, villages, and communities of the students, many of whom are the first in their families to graduate. The expansion of the jobs portal to include both local and international career opportunities further highlights the importance of exposing students to employment opportunities.

Looking ahead, the PPS Foundation remains committed to fostering opportunities and cultivating the untapped potential of the youth in South Africa. The Foundation’s efforts will be focused on expanding sponsorship to support high school learners through programmes like Cultivating Tomorrow’s Professionals (CTP), a study program that supports Grade 12 students, as well as the Klein Karoo Rising programme, which provides scholar mobility, solar lights and bursary support.

Furthermore, the focus will also be on developing mentorship capabilities on the Professionals Connect platform to support alumni as they transition into the professional world. Operationally, our efforts will be on building consistency, transparency, and efficiently operating under the requirements of the PBO with tightened controls and processes.

The Foundation's unwavering commitment to education and skills development continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of South African youth, contributing to the development of a better and stronger South Africa for the greater good.
