PPS notes with concern the signing into law of the National Health Insurance Bill (NHI Bill). As an organisation, we have been actively engaging the legislative process on behalf of our members and submitted suggestions on how the Bill could be amended to make it more practical and meet the objectives of serving all South Africans.
Furthermore, we collated and submitted member feedback on the Bill and represented members at the Parliamentary Health Portfolio Committee meetings to ensure that professionals’ voices are heard. These representations did not lead to any changes in the Bill as drafted.
Although the NHI Bill has been signed into law, there is still room to influence the details of how the legislation will be implemented. This can be done by engaging in the public participation elements of developing the regulations supporting the Act and other pieces of legislation that need to be in place to operationalise the NHI.
We believe there is significant potential for private sector participation in the final solution. Only through constructive engagement can we develop a solution that benefits all South Africans in the health value chain.
As PPS, we would like to assure members that the signing of the NHI Bill into law will not impact their health benefits (insurance and medical aid). Your health benefits will at this stage, remain unchanged. We will keep you informed should any amendments be required in future.

Although we are disappointed with the rushed way the legislation was signed, we remain committed to representing the interests of graduate professionals who are important contributors to service delivery in the health sector.
