PPS play a part in helping the matric class of 2020

Published: October 5, 2020

Professional Provident Society (PPS), the financial services company for graduate professionals, is proud to support the #SaveTheClassof2020 initiative, a campaign hosted by Primestars. As part of its ethos of mutuality, PPS wants to play a role in helping learners in their final year of high school to cross the finish line.

Primestars is an organisation that facilitates youth development for high school students and has successfully implemented educational programmes benefitting high school learners from communities across South Africa. The #SaveTheClassof2020 campaign aims to help current matriculants, who were restricted or unable to continue with their school work during the lockdown due to limited access to resources, by offering extra tuition. In this way, they will be fully prepared to write their final exams.

The matric examinations are set to begin on 5 November 2020 and conclude on 15 December 2020.  The COVID-19 pandemic brought disruptions to the education system, making it even more challenging for matriculants who want to complete school and enter the next phase of their lives. To help them prepare, tuition is provided to learners from underserviced public school communities through a 10-week examination preparation programme, paid for by Primestars through donations made by private and public corporations.

To drive the initiative and reach as many beneficiaries as possible, Primestars have adopted a multi-platform approach. This means that in addition to face-to-face teaching, which remains the primary channel of delivering the lessons, an online platform is currently being developed. The platform that PPS has made a financial donation towards is where Math & Science content will be curated and hosted.

“As part of our belief that success is better shared, we know that our contribution to this innovative programme, especially with its focus on STEM, will complement the national agenda by closing the skills gap and give learners an opportunity towards making their career dreams a reality,” says Ayanda Seboni, Executive: PPS Brand, Marketing & Communications.

The programme, which began on 10 September 2020 and will end on 25 November 2020, covers the entire Mathematics and Science curriculum in a cinema setting and is accessible to learners across the country.

“We realised that the lockdown led to a setback in the curriculum, forcing learners to unlearn, learn and re-learn by themselves. For this reason, we are convinced that together we can actively contribute to the development of South Africa’s next wave of empowered young graduate professionals,” says Masenyane Molefe, Executive Trustee of the PPS Foundation.
