Good masks make good neighbours

15 September 2020, Johannesburg: Professional Provident Society (PPS), a financial services company, has joined the fight to protect community members against COVID-19 by handing over fabric masks to Holy Family College based in Parktown, Johannesburg.

“Holy Family College, is a neighbouring high school to PPS’s offices and with whom we have had a good relationship with over the years,” says Masenyane Molefe who is a PPS Group HR Executive & PPS Foundation Executive Trustee.

Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, has continuously communicated that South Africa risks a second coronavirus wave if precautions are not applied going forward. Thus, to be fully prepared for what the future may hold and to ensure the safety of the learners and employees of the school, the masks will certainly be handy when schools are operating at full capacity.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank PPS for supplying us with protective gear that will help us to continue our role as educators and curb the spread of the infection,” says Franc Sobreira, principal at Holy Family College.

“As an organisation that places the interests and well-being of people at the heart of our mutual ethos, we are committed to playing our part in making a difference by providing essential protection that not only helps the learners but contributes to protecting their families and society in turn,” add Molefe.

PPS and Holy Family College urges communities across suburbs in South Africa to continue to maintain social distancing and adopt preventative hygiene measures such wearing of masks in public and washing of hands regularly, a priority in breaking the cycle of infection and stemming a potential second wave.

“We respect and thank all frontline workers, including healthcare practitioners, for their dedication and selflessness in taking care of those struck down by this pervasive and crippling virus,” adds Molefe.

As a value-add for the pupils and to strengthen the camaraderie between PPS and the school, the PPS Foundation plans on hosting a tailormade LEAP work-readiness programme session to the 2020 matric class. This is with the hope of providing the pupils with support as they prepare to transition from high school to tertiary and beyond because their plans and dreams for life after grade 12 were still in motion amid the pandemic.
