Published: February 7, 2017

The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and PPS are co-sponsors of the 2017 symposium of the World Interdisciplinary Network for Institutional Research (WINIR) which will explore the legacy of Ludwig Lachmann. This is event will be attended by high-profile economists from all over the world to celebrate the life and contributions of Ludwig M. Lachmann (1906-1990).

Izak Smit, PPS Group CEO, says that PPS is very proud to be associated with this world-class symposium. “As PPS exists for its graduate professional members, it is very fitting that we are involved in this event that celebrates the positive contributions that individuals such as Professor Lachmann have made to society. Many of our members are Wits alumni, so it is truly wonderful to honour his legacy with our members, many of whom hold fond memories of their studies at this prestigious institution.”

“Prof Lachmann was an exceptional social scientist and his achievements ranged across various disciplines including economics, sociology, law and philosophy,” says Smit. “Prof Lachmann is well known for his work on Max Weber, his analysis of the limitations of equilibrium economics, and his contributions to the development of Austrian economics.”

Dr Lyndal Keeton, from the School of Economic and Business Sciences at Wits University, said that the university is looking forward to remembering its former Dean of Humanities and Head of Economics, Professor Lachmann, at the upcoming symposium. “Professor Lachmann published three books and more than 60 articles during his career. While he is most well-known for ‘radical subjectivism’ and his contribution to the Theory of Capital, his research has influenced not just economics, but many other fields in the social sciences.”

In addition to his considerable research contribution, his memory continues through the generations of academics and entrepreneurs who were inspired by his teaching - both locally and internationally, she adds.

“With three prominent keynote speakers, including Richard Langlois (University of Connecticut and University of the Witwatersrand), Deidre Mccloskey (University of Illinois at Chicago), and Virgil H. Storr (George Mason University), and a panel discussion between former students and colleagues of the late Professor, the symposium promises to be an opportunity for local and international academics both to remember Professor Lachmann and to celebrate his legacy in the form of the latest research inspired by his work,” she says.

The symposium will be hosted at PPS’ head office in Parktown, Johannesburg from 11-13 April 2017. Members of the public can still register to attend the event until 1 April 2017, but seats are limited. Please visit the website for further information.
